Business and political leaders honor property tycoon Lee Shau-kee in memorial

Hong Kong’s political and business elite gathered today for a public memorial to honor the late property tycoon Lee Shau-kee, founder of Henderson Land Group and a well-known philanthropist. Lee passed away at the age of 97 on March 17.

The memorial began with a private vigil at Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point on Sunday, attended by notable figures from both the political and business sectors. Today’s public memorial was followed by a funeral service, which included Buddhist rites, at 11 am.

Political figures who attended the service included Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), along with his wife Regina Leung Tong Ching-yee. Other attendees included Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki and Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po.

Key business leaders present at the memorial included Alex Yeung Ching-loong of Emperor Group, Victor Li Tzar-kuoi of CK Hutchison, David Li Kwok-po of Bank of East Asia, Peter Woo Kwong-ching of Wharf (Holdings), Peter Wong Tung-shun of HSBC, and Irene Lee Yun-lien of Hysan Development.

Lee’s sons, Peter Lee Ka-kit and Martin Lee Ka-shing, who are also chairmen of Henderson Land Group, arrived at the funeral home at 9 am. They expressed gratitude on behalf of the family to the community and media for their condolences.

The funeral procession began at 12:30 pm, with political and business leaders acting as pallbearers. Among them were Leung Chun-ying, Eric Chan, Paul Chan, David Li, Yin Zonghua, deputy director of the central government’s liaison office, Legislative Council President Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, Executive Council Convenor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, former Sun Hung Kai Properties managing director Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong, Henderson Land Group Vice Chairman Colin Lam Ko-yin, and The University of Hong Kong President Zhang Xiang.

Lee’s remains will be taken to his ancestral hometown of Shunde, Guangdong province, for burial. The family will choose an auspicious date for the interment.

A large tented area has been set up by Lee’s family across from the funeral home, allowing the public to pay their respects. The memorial features an elegant altar, 12 meters long and 5 meters high, adorned with white flowers, creating a solemn atmosphere.
